Spurs line up sensational move for £130m Premier League star who could eclipse Tonali signing – Opinion

Tottenham Hotspur have emerged as one of the biggest spenders of the 2026 summer transfer window, making a huge statement with their ambitious recruitment under Roberto De Zerbi.

After Manchester City shattered records by signing Elliot Anderson for £116 million, Spurs responded by bringing in Mateus Fernandes for £85 million before smashing their own transfer record to land Italian midfielder Sandro Tonali in a blockbuster £100 million deal. The move underlined the club’s new ambition and signalled that Tottenham are prepared to compete financially with England’s biggest clubs.

With Liverpool’s £125 million signing of Alexander Isak still standing as the Premier League’s record transfer, Tonali now ranks among the most expensive arrivals in top-flight history, alongside Chelsea’s Moises Caicedo (£115m), Manchester City’s Elliot Anderson (£116m), Arsenal’s Declan Rice (£105m) and Manchester United’s Paul Pogba (£89m).

Tonali expected to transform Tottenham

When Tottenham were first linked with Tonali, many believed Arsenal would eventually win the race if they entered the picture. Instead, Spurs capitalised on the opportunity, completing a landmark deal that immediately changed perceptions of the club.

Tonali arrives with a reputation as one of Europe’s finest midfielders. Newcastle boss Eddie Howe once admitted he “fell in love” watching the Italian play, while his agent Beppe Riso has described him as “one of the best midfielders in the world.”

The former AC Milan star is admired for his composure, passing range, intelligence under pressure and ability to influence every phase of the game. He combines creativity with defensive discipline, contributing 18 goal involvements across the last two seasons while also averaging an impressive number of ball recoveries.

His all-round qualities make him an ideal fit for Roberto De Zerbi’s style of football.

Spurs could now target an even bigger statement signing

Despite already strengthening significantly, Tottenham’s transfer business may not be over.

The North London side continue to be linked with Bournemouth forward Eli Junior Kroupi, while AC Milan winger Rafael Leão has also been mentioned as a possible target.

However, Aston Villa star Morgan Rogers is emerging as perhaps the most exciting name on Spurs’ radar.

According to club insider Paul O’Keefe, Tottenham are huge admirers of the England international, although competition for his signature is expected to be fierce, with Arsenal also pushing to secure the 23-year-old.

Why Morgan Rogers would be a game-changing addition

Rogers has rapidly developed into one of the Premier League’s standout attacking players and is now reportedly valued at around £130 million.

A Europa League winner and PFA Young Player of the Year, the Villa star has become the focal point of Unai Emery’s attack thanks to his explosive dribbling, physical presence, creativity and eye for goal.

Since breaking into the spotlight, Rogers has produced remarkable numbers, recording 14 goals and 16 assists during the 2024/25 campaign before following that up with another 14 goals and 12 assists in 2025/26.

His arrival would provide Tottenham with the elite attacking leader they have arguably lacked since Harry Kane’s departure, while also easing the creative burden on players like Dominic Solanke.

Although Tonali has the potential to dominate matches from midfield, Rogers could elevate Spurs even further by becoming the club’s new attacking talisman. If Tottenham were somehow able to beat Arsenal to his signature after already securing Tonali, it would rank among the most impressive transfer windows in the club’s history.
