Djed Spence has emerged as an important player for England at the World Cup, showcasing his versatility by playing on both flanks in defence. The Tottenham full-back started at left-back against Ghana before switching to his natural right-back role after injuries to Reece James and Jarell Quansah.
His ability to perform effectively on either side of the defence has been a major factor in his progress at Spurs. While Spence still has room to improve in the final third, his defensive qualities have made him one of Tottenham’s most dependable defenders.
Ahead of England’s clash with Norway, Spence lightened the mood during a press conference by asking teammate Morgan Rogers whether he was the fastest player in the squad.
“There has been a lot of speculation in recent weeks about who is the fastest in the squad. Is it true that Djed Spence is the fastest?” Spence joked.
Rogers laughed before replying: “Let’s just say I wouldn’t bet against you in a race. There are a couple of players who think they could beat you, Anthony Gordon being one of them, so I’d like to see that race. But I still wouldn’t bet against you.”
Rogers’ comments underline one of Spence’s biggest strengths—his outstanding pace—which Tottenham should continue to maximise.
Although Roberto De Zerbi faces a selection dilemma next season with Pedro Porro firmly established at right-back and a natural left-footed option potentially preferred on the opposite side, Spence’s speed remains a valuable weapon.
The 25-year-old ranked as the Premier League’s third-fastest player last season, reaching a top speed of 36.62 km/h against Wolves. His defensive numbers were equally impressive, recording 111 ball recoveries, 44 tackles, and being dribbled past only 10 times throughout the campaign.
While Spence may not be an automatic starter, his recovery pace and defensive reliability make him an important asset. If he continues to perform consistently, there is every chance he can force his way into De Zerbi’s starting lineup.
