Tottenham Hotspur have wasted little time strengthening their squad this summer as they aim to bounce back from a disappointing campaign.
After narrowly avoiding relegation, Spurs secured their Premier League status following the arrival of Roberto De Zerbi in March. The Italian is now focused on reshaping the team to fit his philosophy ahead of the new season.
The north London club have already invested around £52 million to sign Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton & Hove Albion, while Martin Dúbravka, Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi have all arrived on free transfers.
Tottenham’s ambition in the transfer market has also been highlighted by their pursuit of Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali, with negotiations now appearing to gather momentum.
According to BBC Sport journalist Sami Mokbel, Spurs are making encouraging progress in their attempts to sign the Italy international and are increasingly optimistic that a deal can be completed.
Reports from Italy claim Tottenham have already reached an agreement on personal terms with Tonali, who is expected to earn around £200,000 per week. The remaining hurdle is agreeing a transfer fee with Newcastle.
An opening offer of £75 million was rejected earlier this month, and Tottenham are preparing an improved proposal. Newcastle are believed to want a package worth £100 million, while Spurs are reportedly confident that an offer in the region of £85 million could be enough to strike a deal for the 26-year-old.
Landing Tonali would represent a major statement from Tottenham. The midfielder has established himself as one of the Premier League’s standout defensive midfielders, making 110 appearances for Newcastle since joining the club.
Spurs are eager to strengthen their midfield following Yves Bissouma’s departure at the end of his contract. João Palhinha has also returned to Bayern Munich after his loan spell, while Xavi Simons is expected to miss several months with an ACL injury, leaving De Zerbi in need of additional quality in the centre of the pitch.
Although Tottenham celebrated Europa League success in 2025, consecutive 17th-place Premier League finishes have underlined the need for significant improvement. Securing the signature of a player of Tonali’s calibre from a potential rival for European qualification would send a powerful message about the club’s ambitions heading into the new season.
