Tottenham Hotspur have taken another significant step in their pursuit of Sandro Tonali, with reports from Italy claiming the North London club have now reached a major breakthrough by agreeing personal terms with the Newcastle United midfielder.
Spurs have made Tonali one of their priority targets this summer as Roberto De Zerbi looks to rebuild his squad ahead of the new Premier League campaign. Earlier this month, Tottenham saw an opening bid worth £75 million turned down by Newcastle, who remain reluctant to lose one of their most influential players. The Magpies are understood to value the Italy international at around £100 million before they would even consider sanctioning a transfer.
Despite the setback, Tottenham have continued negotiations and remain determined to complete the signing. Reports from Sky Sports Italy previously revealed that Tonali had already given the green light to a move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, and fresh updates suggest the club have now made further progress.
According to Sport Mediaset, Tottenham and Tonali have reached an agreement over a six-year contract that would see the midfielder earn around €12 million per season, including bonuses, which works out at approximately £200,000 per week. Reporter Orazio Accomando adds that while personal terms are now in place, the two clubs have yet to agree on a transfer fee. Spurs are optimistic that negotiations can be concluded before the end of the week.
Tonali currently earns around £8 million annually at Newcastle, meaning the proposed Tottenham contract would represent a substantial salary increase.
The focus now shifts to negotiations between the two clubs. Tottenham are reportedly preparing an improved offer worth around £85 million, with performance-related add-ons that could take the overall package closer to Newcastle’s valuation and potentially persuade the Magpies to sell.
Spurs are not alone in the race, however. Manchester City continue to monitor Tonali’s situation despite progressing with a major deal to sign Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest for a package reportedly worth £116 million including bonuses.
Following Tottenham’s disappointing campaign last season, Roberto De Zerbi has wasted little time reshaping the squad. The Lilywhites have already strengthened by signing Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton in a £52 million deal, while Martin Dubravka, Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi have all joined on free transfers.
However, Tottenham are eager to make one marquee signing to underline their ambitions, with Tonali viewed as the ideal statement acquisition. Alongside their pursuit of the Italian, Spurs are also in discussions with West Ham United over midfielder Mateus Fernandes, who has attracted interest from Manchester United and Real Madrid.
After consecutive 17th-place finishes in the Premier League, Tottenham know further investment will be required to return to the top end of the table. Completing a deal worth more than £80 million for Tonali would not only strengthen De Zerbi’s midfield but also send a clear message that Spurs are serious about competing again.
