Tottenham’s ambitious summer rebuild under Roberto De Zerbi is gathering pace, with the club continuing to strengthen key areas ahead of the new Premier League campaign.
Spurs have been one of the most active sides in the transfer market so far. The arrivals began with Andy Robertson from Liverpool, before Bournemouth centre-back Marcos Senesi followed him through the door as Tottenham moved swiftly to reinforce their defence.
The North London club then completed a £52 million deal for Dutch international Jan Paul van Hecke, reuniting the defender with De Zerbi after their successful spell together at Brighton. Experienced goalkeeper Martin Dubravka has also joined the squad, adding valuable depth between the posts.
Despite those additions, midfield remains a priority. Newcastle United star Sandro Tonali is still viewed as De Zerbi’s dream signing, with the Italian manager believing his fellow countryman would fit perfectly into his tactical system. Spurs have already opened discussions with Tonali’s camp, but Newcastle’s reported £100 million valuation has complicated negotiations.
As a result, Tottenham have intensified their pursuit of West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes. While Manchester United have tracked the Portuguese youngster throughout the summer, Spurs have emerged as serious contenders and have accelerated talks with the Hammers in recent days.
According to TEAMtalk, Tottenham have now submitted an opening proposal worth up to £85 million for Fernandes. The offer reportedly includes £65 million paid upfront, with a further £20 million made up of bonuses and performance-related add-ons.
The structure is designed to bring Spurs closer to West Ham’s valuation while easing the immediate financial burden of the deal.
Fernandes only joined West Ham from Southampton last year but quickly established himself as one of the club’s standout performers. His impressive displays have attracted interest from several European giants, including Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester United.
However, Tottenham appear increasingly confident of winning the race. Reports suggest Spurs have put forward a more attractive financial package than their rivals, while Fernandes is also believed to be enthusiastic about a move to North London.
West Ham recognise the 21-year-old as one of their most valuable assets following relegation, meaning any sale would generate a substantial profit. For Tottenham, landing Fernandes would represent another major statement in what is already shaping up to be an aggressive and ambitious transfer window.
The midfielder has earned widespread praise since arriving in England. Former Southampton player Jo Tessem described Fernandes as Southampton’s standout performer and highlighted his speed, technical quality and maturity. Tessem compared his trajectory to that of Roméo Lavia, insisting Fernandes possesses all the attributes required to become an elite Premier League midfielder, praising his passing ability, composure and quickness on the ball.
