Djed Spence’s place in England’s 26-man World Cup squad caught many by surprise after the Tottenham full-back fell out of the starting lineup during the closing stages of the season.
England manager Thomas Tuchel explained that Spence’s pace and strength in one-on-one defending were key factors behind his selection, with the 25-year-old named as one of four full-backs in the squad.
Spence has described his World Cup call-up as a dream come true, saying he remained confident despite the challenges and setbacks he has faced in recent years.
As England continue their preparations in Miami, squad numbers have now been confirmed for all 26 players. While Spence wears No. 24 for Tottenham Hotspur, he has been assigned the No. 25 shirt for England.
The numbering appears to indicate that the lower numbers have largely been reserved for players expected to feature in Tuchel’s preferred starting lineup, suggesting Spence may begin the tournament as a backup option. However, strong performances in training could still help him earn a bigger role.
Tuchel’s squad selection reflects a focus on tactical balance and specialist roles rather than simply choosing the 26 highest-profile players. As a result, Spence could prove valuable in specific situations, particularly when England need defensive stability late in matches.
The Tottenham defender may also be considered for starts against stronger opponents in the knockout rounds, where his speed and defensive ability could make him an ideal option for dealing with dangerous wingers.
