Mario Melchiot has urged Chelsea’s Mykhailo Mudryk to work on his positioning as an attacker, and try to avoid playing in deep areas of the pitch.
Mudryk played a part for the Blues, as they picked up maximum points from their Premier League encounter with Newcastle on Monday night.
The 23-year-old came off the bench to score Chelsea’s third goal in the 3-2 win, and it ultimately proved to be an important strike after the Magpies’ attempted a late fightback.
Melchiot was impressed with the contribution of Mykhailo Mudryk in the win against Newcastle, but the former Chelsea defender thinks he would do himself more good by playing more as an attacker than dropping into midfield.
“Mudryk sometimes picks the ball up and he goes back that far to pick it up he has to run 40 yards before he can take someone on,” Melchiot told ESPN while discussing the Ukrainian.
“…If the guy goes really deep and picks it up, it’s the easiest job he’s giving the defenders. He has to work on that. Where do I pick up the ball to become more dangerous?”
According to BBC, Mudryk has attempted just 17 shots at goal all season, scoring six times from them. In contrast, Chelsea teammates, Nicolas Jackson and Enzo Fernandez have managed 52 and 50 shots, respectively.
The data clearly suggests that Mudryk’s attacking contributions haven’t been good enough, and as Melchiot has pointed out, there’s a need for that issue to be addressed if he’s to truly grow into the dangerous player he was thought to be before signing for Chelsea last year.
