Tottenham player ratings vs Coventry City: Maddison impresses as Robertson struggles

Tottenham Hotspur finally secured a much-needed 3–1 victory over Coventry City after preparing for the match with a morale-boosting training trip to Marbella.

James Maddison gave Spurs an early lead with an excellent finish in the 14th minute, raising hopes of a strong performance under Roberto De Zerbi.

However, Tottenham failed to maintain their momentum, and a costly mistake allowed Jack Rudoni to equalise for Coventry. Omar Marmoush later restored Spurs’ advantage with a superb finish before Ben Davies sealed the victory with a late goal in the 96th minute.

Although the result was positive, several Tottenham players struggled to impress, leaving De Zerbi with areas to address.

Jan Paul van Hecke comes under criticism

Jan Paul van Hecke endured a difficult evening after making an error that contributed to Coventry’s equaliser.

The defender lost possession during the build-up, allowing Rudoni to punish Tottenham’s defensive lapse. His overall display was also disappointing, with just one tackle and two lost duels.

While Spurs eventually collected all three points, the mistake highlighted concerns about Van Hecke’s consistency and defensive reliability. He will need to improve in upcoming matches to justify the expectations surrounding his arrival.

Maddison provides a major positive

James Maddison delivered one of Tottenham’s best performances, reminding supporters of his attacking quality after spending time away from regular first-team action.

The midfielder opened the scoring with a brilliant finish and continued to trouble Coventry throughout his 69 minutes on the pitch.

He also won four duels, drew four fouls and recorded six defensive actions, demonstrating his willingness to contribute beyond the attacking side of his game.

His performance offered encouragement to De Zerbi, although maintaining his fitness and consistency will be crucial if he is to become a key player again.

However, Van Hecke’s costly error showed that defensive improvements remain necessary. De Zerbi will want his team to become more disciplined and consistent as they look to build on this result.

The victory provides Tottenham with some welcome momentum, but they must eliminate avoidable mistakes if they want to put together a stronger run of performances.
