I cried when I realised my Liverpool career was over – I shouldn’t have been on the pitch

Thiago Alcantara has revealed that he broke down in tears after realising his playing career at Liverpool was effectively over.

The Spanish midfielder joined Liverpool from Bayern Munich in 2020, arriving at Anfield with a huge reputation after enjoying success with Barcelona and the German giants. However, persistent injury problems prevented him from consistently showing his quality in the Premier League.

During his time with the Reds, Thiago won the FA Cup and Carabao Cup, while also helping the club reach the Champions League final in 2022. Unfortunately, his final campaign turned into a nightmare after hip surgery in the summer of 2023 left him sidelined for almost the entire season.

Recalling the painful moment his Liverpool career came to an end, Thiago explained that his final appearance against Arsenal was never supposed to happen.

He revealed that Jurgen Klopp had invited him to travel with the squad, believing his presence could positively influence the team. Thiago was initially named among the substitutes before Klopp unexpectedly offered him the opportunity to come on.

The midfielder accepted, despite not being physically ready to play. Just five minutes after entering the game, he suffered a hamstring injury — the first of his career.

Thiago admitted that he immediately feared the worst because of his ongoing struggles with injuries. The emotional impact was overwhelming, leaving him in tears both during and after the match.

Eventually, he had to accept the reality of his situation and find peace with the difficult decision to walk away from professional football.

Despite his injury struggles, Thiago’s Liverpool career was not without memorable moments. His contribution to the club’s domestic cup double in 2022 remains a significant achievement, although many supporters believe he could have accomplished much more had injuries not repeatedly interrupted his progress.

Retirement, however, did not keep him away from football for long. Thiago quickly transitioned into coaching at Barcelona, working as an assistant to Hansi Flick during two separate spells before departing following the club’s second consecutive league title.

There are also growing hopes that he could eventually return to Liverpool in a coaching capacity. Earlier this year, Thiago was spotted at the club’s AXA Training Centre, where he held discussions with Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola.

Although no official appointment has been announced, the meeting has fuelled speculation about a possible reunion with the club where he spent four seasons.

Thiago previously explained to Rio Ferdinand that he could not immediately join Liverpool’s coaching staff because he did not yet possess the necessary coaching qualifications.

That situation could change in the future as he continues developing his managerial ambitions. With former players such as Mikel Arteta and Xabi Alonso making their mark in management, Thiago could eventually follow a similar path.

For Liverpool supporters, the possibility of seeing the former midfield maestro return to Anfield in a different role remains an exciting prospect. His playing career on Merseyside ended in heartbreaking circumstances, but his connection with the club could yet lead to another chapter.
