TOTTENHAM RECEIVE DOUBLE INJURY BLOW AS DE ZERBI PROVIDES LATEST SQUAD UPDATE AHEAD OF COVENTRY CLASH
Tottenham Hotspur have suffered another setback ahead of their Premier League meeting with Coventry City, with Roberto De Zerbi confirming that two important players will be unavailable for Monday’s fixture.
Spurs are still searching for their first league victory of the season after a difficult start to the campaign. Despite showing promising signs against Manchester United, they were unable to turn their first-half dominance into goals.
Manchester United eventually took the lead, while Tottenham were reduced to ten men following Rodrigo Bentancur’s dismissal. However, Dominic Solanke rescued a point for De Zerbi’s side with a late header to secure a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford.
Tottenham will now be hoping to build on that fighting performance when they welcome Coventry City to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
De Zerbi confirms double injury setback
Speaking ahead of the Coventry encounter, De Zerbi confirmed that Savio and Lucas Bergvall will both miss the game through injury.
Savio picked up a muscular problem shortly before Tottenham travelled to Marbella for their training camp. The Brazilian winger is expected to spend several weeks on the sidelines, although the exact length of his absence remains uncertain.
Bergvall, meanwhile, suffered a knee problem during the opening stages of Tottenham’s match against Manchester United. Although the midfielder managed to finish the game, he subsequently reported the issue to the club’s medical staff.
De Zerbi expects the Swedish youngster to be unavailable for approximately two weeks.
The double setback comes at an unfortunate time for Tottenham, with both players having contributed positively to the team’s performance against Manchester United.
Pedro Porro’s return date revealed
There was also an update on Pedro Porro, who has been recovering from a hamstring injury sustained during Tottenham’s 3-2 defeat to Aston Villa before the September international break.
The Spanish defender missed his country’s Nations League fixtures and was also unavailable for the Manchester United match.
However, De Zerbi remains hopeful that Porro could return to action when Tottenham face Chelsea next weekend.
His potential comeback would provide a welcome boost to the Spurs defence, which has been dealing with fitness problems in recent weeks.
De Zerbi faces selection decisions against Coventry
The absence of Savio and Bergvall presents De Zerbi with fresh selection challenges as Tottenham prepare for a crucial home fixture.
Bergvall’s injury could create an opportunity for Mateus Fernandes to feature in midfield alongside Sandro Tonali, while Rodrigo Bentancur’s suspension further limits the manager’s available options.
In attack, Mohammed Kudus could be considered as a replacement for Savio on the right wing. That could also open the door for Mathys Tel to start on the opposite flank, with Omar Marmoush potentially supporting Dominic Solanke in the forward line.
Tottenham will need to make the most of their available players as they look to turn their recent improvement into a much-needed victory.
With Coventry arriving for Monday’s encounter, De Zerbi will be hoping his team can overcome their injury problems, improve their finishing and finally secure their first Premier League win of the campaign.
