Aryna Sabalenka suffers a shock Cincinnati exit as Elena Rybakina’s World No. 1 dream is dramatically halted!

Cincinnati Shock as Sabalenka Crashes Out and Rybakina’s No. 1 Dream Is Halted

A dramatic week at the Cincinnati Open saw World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka suffer a shock exit, while Elena Rybakina’s opportunity to take over the top spot in the WTA rankings was also cut short.

Twenty-year-old Czech player Sara Bejlek produced the biggest victory of her career by defeating Sabalenka 7-6(7), 6-4. Bejlek battled through a tense contest, overturning difficult moments to claim her first win over a top-10 opponent and secure a place in her maiden WTA 1000 quarter-final.

Sabalenka’s early departure created a major opportunity for Rybakina, who was pushing to replace her at No. 1. After beating Diana Shnaider in straight sets to reach the quarter-finals, Rybakina moved closer to achieving that goal.

However, her hopes were dashed during her clash with Iga Świątek. Despite leading 4-1, Rybakina was forced to retire because of a left ankle injury, bringing her Cincinnati campaign to an unfortunate end and allowing Sabalenka to remain at the top of the rankings for the time being.

The tournament therefore delivered mixed fortunes for the leading players. Bejlek celebrated a breakthrough moment, Sabalenka suffered a stunning defeat, and Rybakina saw her bid for the World No. 1 ranking interrupted by injury.

With the US Open approaching, the battle at the top of women’s tennis remains extremely close, and the upcoming matches could still bring major changes to the WTA rankings.
