Tottenham target Kim Min-jae as Bayern Munich make January stance clear

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly monitoring Bayern Munich defender Kim Min-jae ahead of the January transfer window, although a mid-season move for the South Korean centre-back currently looks unlikely.

The 29-year-old has found it difficult to secure a consistent starting role at Bayern over the past year, which has reportedly attracted interest from several Premier League clubs.

According to reports from Football Insider, Tottenham have been keeping an eye on Kim’s situation. However, Bayern Munich are not currently looking to allow the experienced defender to leave during the January window.

Bayern manager Vincent Kompany is reportedly keen to keep Kim in his squad as the German giants compete for major domestic and European honours. That stance could make it difficult for Spurs to complete a deal in January.

Tottenham’s interest in Kim is not new. The defender was previously linked with a move to North London in 2020 when former Spurs manager Jose Mourinho was reportedly keen on signing him. Tottenham ultimately chose not to complete the deal, with Kim later moving from Beijing Guoan to Fenerbahce.

Since then, Kim has established himself at the highest level of European football. He helped Napoli win the Serie A title before moving to Bayern Munich, where he has continued to gain valuable experience.

For Tottenham, his experience and defensive qualities could make him an attractive option as Roberto De Zerbi looks to strengthen his squad.

Spurs did add to their central-defensive options during the summer, but defensive problems have continued to affect the team this season. Bringing in another experienced centre-back could therefore become a consideration.

However, Bayern’s current position means a January transfer appears difficult. The situation could become more interesting next summer, when Kim is reportedly expected to enter the final year of his Bayern contract.

If Tottenham remain interested, they may have to wait until the end of the season before making a serious move. Much could depend on Kim’s role in Kompany’s plans and whether Bayern change their position on his future.

For now, Spurs are monitoring the situation, but a January move for the South Korean defender does not appear to be straightforward.
