Tottenham’s big transfer decision over Luca Williams-Barnett after squad promotion

Tottenham youngster Luca Williams-Barnett has taken another significant step in his development after being included in the club’s latest first-team squad photograph.

The 18-year-old winger travelled with Spurs during their pre-season tour of Australia and Asia over the summer and is now officially part of Roberto De Zerbi’s senior squad.

De Zerbi has previously described Williams-Barnett as a “potential top player”, highlighting the teenager’s ability and long-term potential. Having already made his senior debut under former head coach Thomas Frank last season, the youngster is now hoping to establish himself further around the first team.

However, opportunities have been limited under De Zerbi so far. The Italian has been cautious about introducing academy players into a Tottenham side under enormous pressure, and Williams-Barnett was notably left out of the squad for the Carabao Cup defeat to Liverpool.

With Spurs struggling badly for goals and creativity, though, the situation could eventually force De Zerbi to consider alternative options. Williams-Barnett’s direct running, versatility and ability to contribute in front of goal could provide the manager with another attacking solution.

The biggest concern is the timing. Tottenham are currently bottom of the Premier League, leaving De Zerbi reluctant to place too much responsibility on a teenager in such a difficult situation.

Speaking before the international break, De Zerbi explained that managing a young player with significant potential requires careful consideration.

He said he had not forgotten about Williams-Barnett or fellow academy prospect Malachi Hardy, but stressed that the club needed to identify the right moment to introduce them.

That decision could become even more complicated as Tottenham’s senior attackers gradually return from injury.

Dejan Kulusevski has resumed training and is closing in on a return after spending almost 18 months on the sidelines, while Chelsea loanee Mykhailo Mudryk is also expected to return from an ankle problem within the next three to five weeks.

With Spurs also no longer involved in European competition and already eliminated from the Carabao Cup, regular opportunities for Williams-Barnett could become increasingly difficult to find.

A January loan move could therefore become an option if Tottenham believe consistent senior football elsewhere would accelerate his development. The teenager clearly remains part of De Zerbi’s plans, but his immediate pathway into the starting XI is far from straightforward.

Nevertheless, his promotion into the first-team environment represents recognition of the remarkable progress he has made over the past year.

Williams-Barnett enjoyed an outstanding 2025/26 campaign at youth level, scoring 16 goals and providing eight assists in just 20 appearances for Tottenham’s academy sides.

The next challenge is translating those numbers into consistent senior football.

Tottenham will need to carefully manage his development, particularly given the club’s current struggles. The youngster has already shown enough potential to suggest that he deserves a genuine opportunity, and Spurs will be hoping they can find the right pathway to ensure one of their brightest academy talents continues to progress rather than seeing his development stall.
