Liverpool Consider Ambitious Move for Tottenham Star Micky van de Ven

Liverpool are reportedly monitoring Tottenham defender Micky van de Ven as they begin planning for the future of their defence under head coach Andoni Iraola.

The 25-year-old Dutch centre-back has reportedly been on Liverpool’s radar for some time, with his combination of speed, physical strength and Premier League experience making him an attractive option.

Liverpool’s interest is also linked to the club’s plans for Virgil van Dijk. The Dutch captain’s current contract runs until June 2027, meaning Liverpool are already considering potential long-term replacements.

Van de Ven fits the profile Liverpool could be looking for. He is left-footed, extremely quick across the ground and comfortable defending high up the pitch. His pace would allow him to cover space behind the defensive line, while his passing ability could also help Liverpool build attacks from the back.

Former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown has claimed that Liverpool have admired Van de Ven for a long time. He believes the defender could suit Liverpool’s plans to eventually replace Van Dijk, although he also pointed out that Van de Ven has been part of a Tottenham side that has struggled.

The defender’s individual quality, however, remains highly regarded.

There is one major obstacle: Tottenham have little reason to sell him.

Van de Ven recently signed a new five-year contract with Spurs in August and was subsequently named the club’s captain for the 2026/27 season. Tottenham have also indicated that they see him as one of the players around whom they want to build their future.

The Dutchman has already established himself as an important member of the Tottenham squad. Last season, he made 45 appearances in all competitions, including 34 Premier League appearances.

Liverpool would therefore face a difficult negotiation if they decided to make a formal approach. Tottenham would likely demand a substantial transfer fee, particularly because Liverpool are a direct Premier League rival.

From Liverpool’s perspective, Van de Ven’s qualities make him an understandable target. His recovery speed could complement Iraola’s preferred style, while his experience means he would not simply be viewed as a young prospect.

However, Tottenham’s long-term commitment to the defender could make any potential transfer complicated.

For now, Liverpool appear to be monitoring the situation rather than having reached an agreement. If Tottenham’s difficult start to the season continues, speculation surrounding Van de Ven’s future could increase, but Spurs remain in a strong position because of his new contract and captaincy.

Liverpool may see Van de Ven as a possible successor to Van Dijk, but convincing Tottenham to part with their captain would likely require a significant offer and a major change in circumstances.

The situation is therefore one to watch as Liverpool continue planning for the next stage of Iraola’s rebuild.
