Liverpool defender Kostas Tsimikas has admitted that Fenerbahce deserved their victory after the Reds suffered a disappointing 3-2 defeat in the Champions League in Istanbul on Wednesday night.
Liverpool travelled to Turkey hoping to maintain their perfect Champions League record, but defensive mistakes once again proved costly for Andoni Iraola’s men. Despite taking the lead twice during the encounter, the visitors failed to protect their advantage and eventually left the stadium empty-handed.
The Reds made a promising start to the match, with teenage midfielder Trey Nyoni opening the scoring in the 25th minute. His effort gave Liverpool an important advantage, but the celebrations did not last long as Mason Greenwood equalised four minutes later with a free-kick that deflected off Jeremy Jacquet.
Liverpool continued to search for another goal and eventually found one in the second half. Substitute Alexander Isak made an immediate impact in the 69th minute, heading home Cody Gakpo’s cross to put the visitors ahead once again.
However, Liverpool’s defensive problems returned almost immediately. Archie Brown equalised in the 73rd minute following confusion between Gakpo and goalkeeper Alisson Becker. Fenerbahce then completed their comeback when Vedat Muriqi scored the winning goal in the 79th minute with a header.
Speaking after the match, Tsimikas congratulated Fenerbahce and admitted that Liverpool had not performed well enough to deserve a positive result.
“Congratulations to Fenerbahce, they deserve it. We didn’t play how we had to play. We didn’t defend after the goal we conceded. After three or four minutes, automatically we conceded another goal.
“I think we have to mark better if we want to win games. We didn’t play very good and that’s why we lost,” the Greek defender said.
The defender’s comments highlighted Liverpool’s biggest problem on the night: their inability to defend dangerous set-piece situations and maintain concentration after conceding.
Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola was equally frustrated with his team’s defensive performance. He explained that all three goals came from set-piece situations, including a free-kick, a corner and a long throw-in.
The defeat will raise serious questions about Liverpool’s defensive organisation, particularly because the team had previously managed these situations much better in the Premier League.
Tsimikas also endured a difficult evening against Fenerbahce and was replaced by Milos Kerkez with around 15 minutes remaining.
Liverpool have now suffered another disappointing European result, and their coaching staff will need to address these defensive weaknesses before their next fixture.
The Reds must quickly put the defeat behind them as they prepare to face Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Sunday.
For Liverpool supporters, the biggest concern is no longer just losing matches but repeatedly making the same defensive mistakes. If the Reds want to compete for major trophies this season, improving their marking, communication and concentration at the back must become a priority.
