Jamie Carragher blasts Liverpool star over ‘embarrassing’ incident during Arsenal defeat
Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister has faced strong criticism following his reaction during the Reds’ 1-0 Premier League loss to Arsenal, with club legend Jamie Carragher describing his behaviour as embarrassing.
Mac Allister endured a difficult afternoon at Anfield, missing one of Liverpool’s biggest opportunities to get back into the game after heading over the crossbar from close range in the first half.
However, the Argentine found himself at the centre of another controversial moment towards the closing stages of the match when he went down holding his face following a confrontation with Arsenal winger Noni Madueke.
Carragher delivers strong criticism of Mac Allister
Speaking after the game, Carragher admitted that although he wanted Liverpool to secure all three points, he was relieved that Madueke escaped a red card.
The former Liverpool defender was particularly unhappy with Mac Allister’s reaction, insisting that players must be held accountable when they exaggerate contact in an attempt to get an opponent sent off.
Carragher believes this behaviour has become increasingly common in football and needs to be stopped.
The incident started when Mac Allister committed a foul on Martin Odegaard before tapping the Arsenal captain on the back of his head while he was on the ground.
Madueke subsequently confronted the Liverpool midfielder, with the pair making contact forehead-to-forehead before Mac Allister dramatically fell to the ground.
The incident was reviewed by VAR, but officials decided there was no violent conduct. Both Mac Allister and Madueke’s involvement in the confrontation resulted in bookings.
Carragher refuses to defend his own club’s player

Carragher’s comments attracted attention because of his strong connection to Liverpool, but he made it clear that supporting the club would not stop him from criticising one of its players.
There was some contact between the two footballers, but Carragher believed it was nowhere near serious enough to justify Mac Allister’s reaction.
Former Manchester United midfielder Gary Neville also described the incident as embarrassing, while Arsenal legend Ian Wright suggested that the Liverpool star was attempting to gain an unfair advantage.
Liverpool had other reasons to be disappointed with their performance, having failed to register a single shot on target despite attempting 17 shots throughout the contest.
Mac Allister’s missed first-half header was also one of their clearest opportunities to find an equaliser after Kai Havertz had given Arsenal the lead.
The midfielder remains an important figure in Liverpool’s squad because of his technical ability, intelligence and influence in the middle of the pitch.
However, moments like this risk damaging his reputation, particularly when the team needs him to concentrate on delivering performances rather than becoming involved in unnecessary confrontations.
Carragher’s message was clear: footballers should not be encouraged to exaggerate minor incidents in an attempt to influence refereeing decisions, and supporters should be prepared to call out such behaviour even when it comes from players representing their own clubs.
