Andoni Iraola Gives Honest Verdict on Trey Nyoni After Chelsea Display
Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola has praised young midfielder Trey Nyoni following his performance against Chelsea in the Carabao Cup, expressing satisfaction with the teenager’s contribution during Liverpool’s victory.
The Reds progressed to the quarter-finals after beating Chelsea 6-5 on penalties following a 1-1 draw at Anfield. Iraola made several changes to his starting lineup, giving young talents, including Nyoni, Rio Ngumoha, James McConnell and Lewis Koumas, an opportunity to impress.
Nyoni started in central midfield alongside Ryan Gravenberch and delivered an encouraging performance. Although he gave possession away on a few occasions, particularly during the first half, the youngster also showed good defensive awareness and an ability to recover the ball.
Iraola Impressed by Nyoni’s Performance
Speaking after the match, Iraola was particularly pleased with how Nyoni handled the challenge. The Liverpool manager explained that matches of this intensity are valuable for young players because they learn how to perform under pressure in competitions where defeat means elimination.
He also highlighted Nyoni’s physical condition at the end of the encounter, noting that the midfielder finished the game in good shape.
Iraola believes these experiences will help the club’s younger players develop and become more comfortable competing against experienced opposition.
Liverpool’s Youngsters Continue to Impress
The Liverpool boss also expressed satisfaction with the performances of the other young players who featured against Chelsea. He pointed out that they had already demonstrated their quality in the previous Carabao Cup round against Tottenham Hotspur.
According to Iraola, the youngsters have earned opportunities through their performances in training and previous matches. He also made it clear that the club has confidence in their ability to contribute when called upon.
Nyoni’s performance was particularly encouraging, as he completed 65 of his 76 passes, achieving an accuracy of approximately 86 per cent. He also recorded four interceptions, won four duels and made two tackles.
The 19-year-old has continued to gain valuable first-team experience this season, making 10 appearances and already surpassing the playing time he received throughout the previous campaign.
Liverpool Turn Their Attention to Arsenal
Following their Carabao Cup success, Liverpool will now prepare for a demanding run of fixtures, beginning with their Premier League clash against Arsenal.
Iraola acknowledged that the team’s recent home victories have helped improve confidence at Anfield after a difficult spell on their own ground. The manager will hope to maintain that momentum as Liverpool continue competing across multiple competitions.
For Nyoni, the Chelsea match represents another important step in his development. If he continues to improve and takes advantage of the opportunities available to him, the young midfielder could strengthen his position in Liverpool’s first-team plans.
