Liverpool are reportedly considering a move for Sporting CP defender Gonçalo Inácio as they continue their defensive overhaul ahead of the new season.
While much of the focus surrounding Liverpool’s summer transfer activity has been on strengthening their attack, the club’s long-term success under new manager Andoni Iraola could ultimately depend on how effectively they rebuild their defence.
According to reports from The Mirror, Liverpool are reassessing their defensive options following the departures of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Ibrahima Konaté and Andy Robertson. The exits of three key figures have left significant gaps in the squad, forcing the Reds to prioritise defensive reinforcements during the transfer window.
Iraola’s arrival at Anfield signals the start of a new era, with the Spaniard expected to implement his trademark high-energy and aggressive style of play. His tactical approach demands defenders who are comfortable in possession, proactive when pressing and capable of contributing to attacking build-up play.
Liverpool have already made a major investment in their backline by completing the signing of Jeremy Jacquet from Rennes in a deal believed to be worth around £60 million. The highly-rated 20-year-old centre-back is regarded as one of the club’s most important signings for the future and is expected to play a key role following Konaté’s departure.
Despite retaining experienced options such as Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez, Liverpool are still believed to be in the market for another elite central defender. Sporting CP star Gonçalo Inácio has emerged as a leading target, with the Portuguese international impressing scouts through his composure, defensive intelligence and ability to progress the ball from the back.
At 24, Inácio combines valuable experience with room for further development, making him an attractive option for Liverpool. Reports suggest his £55 million release clause would not be considered a major obstacle if the Reds decide to pursue a deal.
The right-back position is also under consideration following Alexander-Arnold’s exit. Rather than signing a direct replacement, Liverpool appear prepared to distribute responsibilities across several players. Conor Bradley is expected to become an important figure once he returns to full fitness, while Jeremie Frimpong and Calvin Ramsay provide additional competition and depth.
On the left side of defence, Liverpool seem better equipped despite Robertson’s move to Tottenham. Milos Kerkez is widely expected to take on a bigger role, while Kostas Tsimikas remains a reliable option who could provide valuable cover throughout the campaign.
Should Liverpool succeed in completing their defensive rebuild, a backline featuring Bradley, Jacquet, Inácio, Van Dijk, Gomez, Kerkez and Tsimikas would offer an impressive blend of youth, experience and technical ability. Such a group would also fit the demands of Iraola’s tactical system and underline the club’s commitment to building for both the present and the future.
Although replacing influential players like Alexander-Arnold, Konaté and Robertson will be a significant challenge, Liverpool supporters will be encouraged by the club’s proactive approach in the transfer market. The recruitment strategy suggests the Reds are focused not only on immediate competitiveness but also on laying strong foundations for sustained success in the years ahead.
