BAD NEWS FOR LIVERPOOL AS CODY GAKPO FACES WEEKS OUT WITH INJURY

Cody Gakpo Injury Blow Leaves Liverpool Facing Key Decisions

Liverpool have been handed an injury concern involving Cody Gakpo after the forward picked up an ankle problem while on international duty with the Netherlands.

Gakpo was forced off during the Netherlands’ match against Serbia after a heavy challenge left him struggling to continue. Dutch journalist Rik Elfrink subsequently reported that medical examinations in Eindhoven showed the Liverpool attacker could be sidelined for several weeks.

The timing is particularly frustrating for Liverpool, with the club preparing for a demanding run of fixtures following the international break.

Gakpo had made an excellent start to the 2026/27 season, contributing six goals or assists across his first six appearances in the Premier League and Carabao Cup. His developing partnership with Alexander Isak had also become an important part of Liverpool’s attacking setup.

The injury could therefore come as a significant setback, particularly with Liverpool scheduled to face Manchester City at Anfield on October 11.

How Many Matches Could Gakpo Miss?

The exact length of Gakpo’s absence has not yet been confirmed. However, the initial description of the injury suggests that he could be unavailable for around three weeks, although his recovery could take longer depending on how the ankle responds to treatment.

If he follows a three-week recovery timeline, Gakpo could potentially miss three matches:

– Manchester City – October 11
– LASK – October 14
– Brentford – October 17

His availability for Liverpool’s Champions League meeting with Villarreal could also become a concern if his recovery takes longer than expected.

Liverpool will be hoping that Gakpo’s rehabilitation progresses quickly and that further assessments provide a clearer indication of when he can return to action.

Opportunity for Liverpool’s Other Attackers

Gakpo’s absence could create an opportunity for some of Liverpool’s other attacking players to take on greater responsibility.

Bradley Barcola and Lewis Koumas could be among the players considered for starting roles, particularly if Alexander Isak is also unavailable for the Manchester City fixture.

Victor Munoz and Rio Ngumoha could also come into consideration as Liverpool look for solutions on the wings.

The situation gives the younger attackers an opportunity to make an impression and potentially earn more playing time while Gakpo recovers.

For now, Liverpool will wait for a more detailed assessment before knowing exactly how long their No.18 will be unavailable. The club will be particularly keen to have him back as soon as possible given the difficult fixtures ahead.
