Sandro Tonali has returned to Tottenham’s starting XI after recovering from the minor knock that forced him to miss the Carabao Cup trip to Liverpool.
The Italian midfielder was named in Roberto De Zerbi’s starting lineup against Aston Villa, making his return after being ruled out of the midweek 3-1 defeat at Anfield.
Tonali had featured in all four of Tottenham’s Premier League matches before the knock, with the club carefully managing his fitness since his £100 million move from Newcastle. De Zerbi confirmed before the Villa game that Tonali was available for selection.
His return comes at an important time for Spurs, who had collected just two points from their opening four Premier League matches and were still searching for their first league win of the campaign.
With Tonali back in midfield, Tottenham will be hoping the summer signing can play a major role as De Zerbi looks to turn around the club’s difficult start.
