Liverpool are reportedly pushing ahead with plans to agree a new and improved long-term contract with Rio Ngumoha, as the club increasingly sees the 18-year-old winger as an important part of its future.
Ngumoha’s development has been extremely rapid. After joining Liverpool from Chelsea’s academy in 2024, he progressed quickly through the youth ranks and into the senior team. He has now gone from being an academy prospect to a player capable of competing for regular first-team minutes.
According to the report, Liverpool are confident an agreement can be reached with Ngumoha over improved terms in the coming months. His existing contract reportedly runs until summer 2028, meaning Liverpool are not under immediate pressure to renew it, but the club wants his deal to reflect how quickly his importance has grown.
Why Liverpool want to secure him
The Reds consider Ngumoha one of the most exciting young players at the club. His pace, direct running and ability to take defenders on one-on-one have made him particularly attractive.
He already made history during his breakthrough season by becoming Liverpool’s youngest-ever goalscorer, scoring a dramatic late winner against Newcastle United. He subsequently made 19 Premier League appearances during that campaign.
Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has also praised the youngster, describing his performance against Wolves as outstanding and referring to him as a “special talent.” That praise reflects the growing belief around the club that Ngumoha has a very high ceiling.
Arsenal interest
Liverpool’s desire to get the contract sorted is also important because Arsenal have reportedly been monitoring Ngumoha.
Earlier reports indicated that Arsenal could be interested in the winger in the future, while transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano said Liverpool’s position has consistently been that Ngumoha is not for sale. Romano also reported that Liverpool and the player’s representatives were already discussing a new contract.
Ngumoha is reportedly happy at Liverpool, and the club believes that giving him a bigger role in the first team will help convince him that his future is at Anfield.
Liverpool’s plan
The new contract would essentially reward Ngumoha for his rapid progress while giving Liverpool greater protection over one of their most valuable young prospects.
The club also wants to continue giving him opportunities in the first team. Although he remains relatively inexperienced, Liverpool appear willing to be patient with his development rather than rushing him.
With his current agreement running until 2028, this is not being presented as an emergency situation. Instead, Liverpool want to get ahead of the situation and ensure his salary and contract reflect his growing status.
Liverpool are optimistic about agreeing improved terms with Rio Ngumoha. The teenager is viewed as a major talent with a bright future at Anfield, and the Reds have no intention of allowing interest from Arsenal or other clubs to distract from their plans.
For Liverpool, securing Ngumoha’s future would be another important step in ensuring that one of England’s most promising young wingers develops into a major first-team player at Anfield.
