Liverpool are reportedly seriously considering making Ronald Araújo’s loan move permanent after his impressive start to life at Anfield.
Araújo joined Liverpool from Barcelona on a season-long loan in August 2026, with the agreement containing a €55 million (£47.3m) option to buy. Liverpool are covering his salary during the loan, while reports say Araújo took a pay cut to make the move happen.
Since arriving, the 27-year-old Uruguay international has featured in all seven of Liverpool’s matches this season, starting five. His ability to play both centre-back and right-back has reportedly been particularly useful to Andoni Iraola’s team.
According to Mundo Deportivo, sources close to Liverpool believe Araújo has adapted very positively to English football, and the club could seriously consider activating the €55m purchase option at the end of the season. His versatility at right-back has also helped provide additional defensive balance.
The purchase option is significant because there had previously been uncertainty over whether Liverpool had the ability to buy him permanently. Fabrizio Romano later clarified that the €55m option is included in the agreement.
Liverpool originally brought Araújo in to strengthen their defence after losing Ibrahima Konaté to Real Madrid and while new signing Jeremy Jacquet was not fully fit.
However, the current report should not be treated as confirmation that Liverpool have already completed or formally decided on a permanent transfer. It says the club is seriously considering using the option based on his early performances. There is still an entire season for his form, fitness and role in the squad to influence the final decision.
Araújo himself has previously spoken positively about joining Liverpool, saying he was excited to play for the club and experience the Premier League.
In short: Liverpool have a €55m option to buy Araújo, and reports now indicate that his strong start has made a permanent transfer a genuine possibility. It remains a reported consideration rather than an officially confirmed permanent signing.
