When Arne Slot guided Liverpool to the Premier League title just 11 months after Jurgen Klopp’s departure, some critics argued that the Dutchman was simply benefiting from the foundations laid by his predecessor.
However, Liverpool’s disappointing 2025/26 campaign has shown that such claims may be unfair. Slot left Anfield as a league champion, but the club ultimately felt a change was needed.
Now, Andoni Iraola has taken charge of a talented yet unbalanced squad and is expected to launch a serious title challenge with his trademark high-intensity style of football.
While much of the transfer speculation has focused on RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomande as a potential replacement for Mohamed Salah, Liverpool’s midfield remains a major concern. The performances of Alexis Mac Allister and his teammates have fallen below expectations, making reinforcements essential if Iraola’s demanding system is to succeed.
According to reports from Italy, Liverpool have approached Juventus regarding midfielder Khephren Thuram. The Frenchman recently turned down interest from Saudi Pro League side Al Ahli, with discussions expected to begin around €50m (£43m).
Thuram is no stranger to Liverpool’s recruitment team. During his time at OGC Nice, he was heavily linked with a move to Anfield as Klopp sought to refresh his midfield following the departures of several key players.
Many believe Thuram possesses qualities similar to former Liverpool star Georginio Wijnaldum. Strong, energetic, technically gifted and capable of influencing every phase of play, the Juventus midfielder has even been described as a “one-man army” in the centre of the park.
His ability to carry the ball, beat opponents and quickly transition attacks makes him an ideal fit for Iraola’s system. Thuram has completed 62% of his dribbles in Serie A this season, highlighting his effectiveness in advancing play from deep positions.
Wijnaldum was one of the most reliable and intelligent midfielders of Klopp’s era, and Liverpool have arguably struggled to replace his influence since his departure. With Mac Allister enduring a difficult spell, Thuram could provide the balance, energy and control that the Reds have been missing.
At around £43m, the Juventus star would represent a relatively affordable addition, potentially allowing Liverpool to strengthen other areas of the squad as well. His decision to reject a lucrative move to Saudi Arabia also reflects his desire to continue competing at the highest level of European football.
For Liverpool, Thuram could be the ideal midfield signing as they look to rebuild and challenge for major honours once again.
