Liverpool hand Matty Wright his first professional contract

Liverpool have officially announced that 18-year-old goalkeeper Matty Wright has signed his first professional contract with the club. The announcement was made on September 22, 2026.

Wright joined Liverpool in summer 2025 and has since progressed through the academy setup. He has been Liverpool’s regular goalkeeper for the U18 side, starting almost all of their matches at the beginning of the 2026/27 U18 Premier League campaign.

The new contract represents another step in Wright’s development and keeps him tied to Liverpool as he continues working toward senior football.

🧤 Liverpool’s goalkeeper situation

Wright’s development comes as Liverpool continue to build depth in the goalkeeper position. The senior squad currently includes Giorgi Mamardashvili and Freddie Woodman, while the academy also has other young goalkeepers.

Liverpool have also agreed a deal for Lucca Brughmans, who is expected to join the club in 2027.

Wright’s contract therefore gives Liverpool another young goalkeeper to develop within their academy pathway.

Why the announcement matters

The contract does not mean Wright is immediately becoming Liverpool’s first-team goalkeeper. Rather, it is an important development step that allows the club to continue his progression under its academy structure.

Liverpool have regularly promoted young players from the academy, and Wright will now look to continue developing his performances and eventually push toward higher levels of football.
