Tottenham Hotspur have made their first major move of the summer, completing the signing of Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton & Hove Albion in a deal worth a reported £52 million.

The Dutch centre-back had been on Spurs’ radar for some time and joins Marcos Senesi and Andy Robertson, who both arrived on free transfers, as part of Roberto De Zerbi’s ambitious defensive overhaul.

Van Hecke Delighted With Spurs Move

Speaking after finalising his transfer, undergoing his medical and signing his contract, Van Hecke expressed his excitement at joining the North London club.

“It’s a great privilege to be a Tottenham player. Joining a club of this stature is something I’ve always dreamed of,” he said.

“I already know the head coach well and I’m excited to work with him again. Micky has also spoken highly about the club, which made the decision even easier.

“I’ve experienced the atmosphere at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as an opposition player, and I’m looking forward to stepping out there in a Spurs shirt and playing in front of the supporters. It’s going to be an incredible feeling.”

What Van Hecke Adds To Spurs

Van Hecke arrives with valuable Premier League experience, having made 106 appearances since breaking into the top flight in 2022, registering four goals and four assists.

He is also familiar with Roberto De Zerbi’s style of play, playing a key role during the Italian’s second season at Brighton. The Seagulls conceded just 46 league goals last season — the third-best defensive record in the division.

In contrast, Tottenham allowed 57 goals, highlighting the need for improvement at the back. Van Hecke’s arrival underlines the club’s determination to strengthen defensively and restore stability to the side.
