“Agent hints at confidence over impending Tottenham transfer

Roberto De Zerbi played a key role in convincing Sandro Tonali to join Tottenham, with Spurs beating several Premier League rivals after agreeing to meet Newcastle United’s valuation. Tonali recently admitted that his fellow Italian’s influence, along with their shared roots in Brescia, helped shape his decision.

The midfielder revealed the transfer came after positive discussions with Newcastle, who worked with him throughout the process to ensure a deal that suited both parties.

> “We had an understanding with Newcastle. We spoke every day and eventually got it done. They wanted the best for me, and we wanted the best outcome for them.”

Explaining why he chose Spurs, Tonali added that De Zerbi’s presence was a major factor, alongside personal and family considerations after spending three years in the North East.

> “De Zerbi deserves a lot of the credit. He convinced me not only as someone from Brescia and a friend, but also because of how dedicated and hardworking he is. We’ll take things step by step, complete the medical and signing, then join up with the squad. The club is coming off a difficult season, but we’ll do everything possible to improve things.”

Agent delighted with Tottenham switch

Tonali’s representative, Giuseppe Riso, also shared his thoughts on the move while speaking after AC Milan youngster Francesco Camarda signed a new contract.

Riso expressed his delight at completing another major transfer and believes the midfielder’s reunion with De Zerbi could be a huge success.

> “It’s a great achievement, even though we’ve done something similar before. Sandro is happy to be working with Roberto again. He’s an excellent coach, and I think the two of them will produce something special together.”

Why Tonali suits De Zerbi

Tonali appears to be an ideal fit for De Zerbi’s tactical approach. While he may not possess the same progressive passing range as Mateus Fernandes, he offers the energy, intelligence and versatility required in the Italian coach’s midfield system.

During his time at Sassuolo, De Zerbi often deployed a double pivot, with one midfielder dictating play from deep while the other made forward runs and supported attacks. Tonali is perfectly suited to that more dynamic role, although he has also shown at Newcastle that he can operate deeper when required.

His ability to break forward, win possession and contribute in both phases of play makes him an excellent addition, and De Zerbi will be confident of getting the very best out of his fellow Italian.
