Liverpool are reportedly stepping up their interest in Tottenham Hotspur defender Djed Spence, with the Reds now seriously considering a move for the pacey full-back after Spurs approved his potential departure.
Spence impressed during the recent World Cup, starring for England despite playing mainly at left-back, even though he is naturally right-footed. His performances came alongside teammate Pedro Porro, who also enjoyed an outstanding tournament with Spain.
Despite Spence’s strong displays, Tottenham are prepared to let him leave. According to TEAMtalk’s Graeme Bailey, the 25-year-old has already been informed that he does not feature in Roberto De Zerbi’s long-term plans and is free to explore a transfer.
While Serie A champions Inter Milan have shown interest following Denzel Dumfries’ move to Real Madrid, Liverpool have now emerged as serious contenders for his signature.
Speaking on the Anfield Index YouTube channel, journalist Dave Davis revealed that Liverpool are actively monitoring Spence and have intensified their interest.
“Liverpool are absolutely taking a serious look at Djed Spence,” Davis said.
Liverpool’s current full-back options include Jeremie Frimpong, Conor Bradley, Milos Kerkez and Kostas Tsimikas, but questions remain over the depth and balance in the position. Frimpong is naturally more of an attacking wing-back, Bradley is still recovering from a serious knee injury, while Tsimikas has struggled to establish himself as the long-term solution on the left.
Spence’s versatility makes him an attractive option, as he is capable of playing on either flank. Davis highlighted his blistering pace, strong one-on-one defending and ability to carry the ball as key reasons why Liverpool are so keen on the defender.
The journalist also suggested Spence could effectively provide cover at both right-back and left-back, particularly if Liverpool decide to part ways with Tsimikas.
However, any deal is unlikely to come cheaply. With Liverpool expected to spend heavily on a new winger, Tottenham are believed to value Spence at around £40 million, boosted by his homegrown status and impressive World Cup campaign.
