Liverpool land Martinez as Karetsas edges closer to Dortmund
Liverpool have secured the signing of highly rated Colombian midfielder Samuel Martinez, but appear increasingly likely to miss out on Greek wonderkid Konstantinos Karetsas.
Borussia Dortmund have stepped up negotiations with Karetsas, his representatives and Genk, making the Bundesliga side favourites to sign the 17-year-old. Dortmund are rebuilding their attack ahead of the new season and have identified the teenager as a key target following the expected exits of Karim Adeyemi and Julian Brandt.
Talks with the player’s camp are progressing well, while discussions with Genk continue. However, the Belgian club have rejected Dortmund’s opening €26 million bid and are demanding around €35 million for one of Europe’s brightest young talents. Liverpool, Brighton, Everton and City Football Group remain informed of the situation but are currently behind in the race.
Meanwhile, Liverpool have completed a deal for 17-year-old Samuel Martinez from Atlético Nacional. The Colombian youngster has successfully passed his medical after travelling to Merseyside and is set to sign a five-year contract in a deal worth $1 million plus a sell-on clause.
Martinez will officially join Liverpool after turning 18 next April. The Reds beat competition from Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund and Manchester City to secure his signature, continuing their focus on recruiting elite young talent under new head coach Andoni Iraola.
