Tottenham have been linked with a number of sporting directors in recent months, but the North London side are yet to officially appoint anyone to the role.
That has not slowed their activity in the transfer market, however. Spurs have moved quickly to strengthen key areas of the squad, completing six signings worth a combined £237 million. They have also sanctioned the departures of four senior players, bringing in around £85 million through sales.
Carlos Raphael Moersen has already made a strong impression during his first transfer window at Tottenham.
The club confirmed his appointment as Director of Football Operations in February, explaining that the newly created position was designed to help establish a modern, high-performance football structure capable of delivering long-term success.
Journalist George Sessions later revealed that Moersen’s duties also extend to overseeing player recruitment.
Now, The Athletic’s Jay Harris has suggested the Dutchman has quickly earned the admiration of those at the club.
Speaking on the Last Word on Spurs podcast, Harris said: “Everyone I’ve spoken to about Rafi Moersen over the last couple of weeks has had nothing but positive things to say about him.”
Meanwhile, reports indicate that Roberto De Zerbi has been given significant authority over Tottenham’s transfer strategy, with the Italian playing a role that extends well beyond that of a traditional head coach.
The 46-year-old is expected to have major influence on recruitment decisions, and with Spurs still without a sporting director, his voice is likely to carry even greater weight.
Many Tottenham supporters are likely to welcome that approach, particularly after years of frustration over what they felt was the club’s reluctance to fully support previous managers in the transfer market.
