Tottenham are expected to prioritise reinforcements across the squad this summer after a difficult campaign that saw them survive relegation only on the final day of the season. A victory over Everton secured their Premier League status, while West Ham suffered the drop instead.
Before Roberto De Zerbi’s arrival, Spurs appeared genuine candidates for relegation, making their eventual survival a major relief. Although supporters remain cautious after such a turbulent year, optimism has started to return thanks to De Zerbi’s influence and the prospect of a productive transfer window.
Midfield is one area that requires significant strengthening, with Tottenham needing both greater quality and improved depth. Archie Gray is regarded as a promising long-term option, but the youngster would benefit from playing alongside a more experienced midfielder or having one available to share responsibilities.
De Zerbi has previously built successful midfields around players such as Alexis Mac Allister and Pascal Gross at Brighton, as well as Adrien Rabiot during his time in France. A move for Mac Allister cannot be completely dismissed, especially after reports linking him with a move away from Liverpool. The Argentine endured a disappointing season at Anfield and could become available if the Reds decide to reshape their squad.
Middlesbrough star Hayden Hackney is another player admired by several Premier League clubs, while Manchester City’s Nico Gonzalez could also emerge as a realistic target if opportunities arise this summer.
Carlos Baleba is another familiar name for De Zerbi, having worked with the midfielder at Brighton. With Manchester United’s interest appearing to cool, Spurs could look to take advantage and bring the Cameroon international to North London, adding power and athleticism to their midfield.
Should De Zerbi continue with his preferred 4-2-3-1 system, a combination of Mac Allister, Gonzalez or Baleba behind James Maddison could provide Tottenham with a far stronger midfield foundation heading into next season. Such additions would undoubtedly boost confidence among the Spurs faithful as they look to put a difficult campaign behind them.
