Tottenham Hotspur are expected to strengthen their squad this summer, but several players could also leave the club during the transfer window.
Securing Premier League survival with a final-day victory over Everton helped Spurs avoid a major squad overhaul, although speculation remains over the futures of some key players. Among those attracting interest is club captain Cristian Romero, who has been linked with Barcelona, Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid despite signing a new contract only last summer.
With uncertainty surrounding Romero’s future, Tottenham have reportedly identified Brighton defender Jan Paul van Hecke as a potential replacement.
Reports suggest Spurs have already submitted an offer for the Dutch centre-back, but Brighton rejected the bid as it fell short of their valuation. The Seagulls are keen to secure a substantial profit on Van Hecke, having signed him from NAC Breda for just £2 million six years ago.
Brighton are believed to want at least £50 million for the 25-year-old, who has only one year remaining on his current deal. However, other reports claim the South Coast club value him closer to £70 million, a fee that would make him Tottenham’s most expensive signing ever.
Such a price tag could prove difficult for Spurs, especially considering they paid £42 million to sign Romero in 2021. Nevertheless, Van Hecke’s contract situation may work in Tottenham’s favour, with the defender reportedly reluctant to sign an extension at Brighton.
Spurs may need to move quickly if they are serious about signing the centre-back, as both Liverpool and Chelsea are also said to be monitoring his situation closely.
