Sad news: An icon has fallen Hoosiers Calbert Cheaney found dead

One of the most poignant stories in Indiana Hoosiers basketball history is that of James “Jimmy” Rayl, a standout player whose life was tragically cut short. Rayl, born on August 9, 1944, in Indianapolis, Indiana, became a legend at Indiana University, where he played under coach Branch McCracken. Rayl’s career with the Hoosiers during the early 1960s was marked by his exceptional scoring ability and tenacity on the court. Known for his sharp shooting and fierce competitiveness, he led the Hoosiers to several successful seasons and remains one of the program’s all-time greats.

 

Tragically, Rayl’s life was cut short when he died in a car accident on January 29, 1977. He was only 32 years old. The accident occurred as he was returning from a basketball game, and his death was a significant loss to the basketball community and his many fans. The Indiana Hoosiers, along with the broader sports community, mourned the loss of a player who had given so much to the game.
