Before a lively crowd in just the second home game since the reopening of Catena Arena following renovation, Rögle Ängelholm came back from a 3-2 third-period deficit to beat SønderjyskE Vojens 8-3, thanks to four goals on a five-minute powerplay.
As was the case in last week’s game in Vojens, SonderjyskE played a stingy defensive game. And as they did last week with youngster Nicolaj Henriksen in net, veteran Patrick Galbraith was in top form. He made several tough saves in the opening period, the biggest coming with about three minutes to go after a turnover in the slot put 18-year-old William Strömgren in alone.
SonderjyskE were able to generate some good offensive chances on their second powerplay of the game early in the second period wich called on Calle Clang to be sharp. They were unable to break through with the all-important first goal, however, and a couple of minutes later it was Rögle striking first. On a 2-on-1, Oskar Stål Lyrenäs feathered a pass into the wheelhouse of Leon Bristedt, who blasted a one-timer through Galbraith at 26:35. Less than a minute later, Rögle got their first powerplay and it took them just eight seconds to double the lead – Ryan McKiernan one-timing the pass from Ludvig Larsson.
SonderjyskE got one back on their third powerplay just shy of the game’s midpoint, as Shawn O’Donnell ripped a shot through a crowd. That was just the start of the comeback for the Danish squad, who scored twice more in the 46th minute to take a 3-2 lead.
Mads Eller tied it on a shot from the point that beat a screened Clang, and then 30 seconds later, SonderjyskE took the lead off an attacking-zone faceoff with Martin Eskildsen putting in the rebound. The Danish squad was looking poised to win their first game of the competition.
However, William Strömgren tied it back up with 10:38 to go, and then just 11 seconds later, a major penalty and game misconduct to O’Donnell with 10:27 to go sunk SonderjyskE. Rögle scored four goals with the man advantage to win going away, with the first coming from Linus Sjödin with three more goals by Rögle following as they secured an 8-3 final score
