The motorsports world is in mourning following the passing of legendary drag racing pioneer Donald Glenn Garlits, who died at the age of 92. Garlits, known as “Big Daddy,” was a revolutionary figure in the world of drag racing, widely regarded as the father of the sport. His influence on the sport spans decades, and his contributions to the development of modern drag racing are immeasurable.
Garlits passed away peacefully at his home in Ocala, Florida, surrounded by family and friends, according to a statement from his family. “We are heartbroken to announce that Don has left us,” the statement read. “He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather, and his impact on the world of motorsports will be felt for generations to come.”
Born on January 14, 1932, in Tampa, Florida, Garlits grew up with a passion for speed and mechanics. He began his racing career in the 1950s, quickly making a name for himself with his innovative engineering and fearless driving style. Over his long and storied career, Garlits won 17 national championships and set numerous records, including being the first driver to break the 200 mph barrier in the quarter-mile.
However, Garlits was not just known for his achievements on the track. He was also a trailblazer off the track, revolutionizing the design of dragsters. After a horrific accident in 1970 that severely injured him, Garlits re-engineered his dragster, creating the rear-engine design that is now standard in the sport. This innovation greatly improved driver safety and is considered one of the most significant advancements in the history of drag racing.
Garlits’ contributions to the sport earned him numerous accolades, including his induction into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame and the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America. His museum in Ocala, the Don Garlits Museum of Drag Racing, remains a tribute to his legacy, showcasing the history of drag racing and his many accomplishments.

NHRA President Glen Cromwell said, “Don Garlits was a giant in our sport. His innovations and contributions to drag racing will never be forgotten.
