Richard Gere purchased his horse, Drukpa, an 8-year-old Appaloosa gelding, without seeing him first—based solely on a friend’s recommendation—just before filming Sommersby. Drukpa had previously worked as a turnback horse at rodeos in Saratoga, New York, and became Gere’s first horse. “I brought him down to Virginia where we were filming. The production had created a Civil War-era town in the middle of a national forest, complete with fields and a stable. I left Drukpa in the paddock there, and whenever I had a 10-minute break, I’d saddle him up and ride off. It was perfect,” Gere recalled. His rival Sham dared to go with him, the two flying together into the first turn, but the pace was blistering – far faster than a marathon 1½-mile race should ever begin. Seasoned bettors gasped; “he’s going too fast,” they muttered. Secretariat didn’t care. He was running into history. Secretariat’s owner, Penny Chenery, would be the first to admit that breeding horses is a genetic crapshoot. She said that Secretariat, “next to having my children, was the most remarkable event in my life. But he was not my creation or accomplishment. We just got lucky.” Secretariat’s full sister, in filly called The Bride, was a fine broodmare but did nothing on the track. When a great one like Secretariat comes along, we feel as if a blessing has been bestowed upon us. And it has. A great comet has streaked across a black sky and we happen to have been walking along a dark country road and seen the celestial rarity in all its brilliance. We will tell our grandchildren what a marvel it was, one that made us feel small and exalted at the same time.
