Los Angeles Dodgers left-hander Clayton Kershaw exited his start against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday night due to pain in his left big toe.
Roberts immediately came out of the dugout with an athletic trainer and removed the three-time National League Cy Young Award winner after Carroll’s 18th homer curled just inside the right foul pole.
Carroll’s homer cut Los Angeles’ lead to 5-3. The Dodgers went on to win 10-9 to extend their advantage on the Diamondbacks to five games in the NL West.
Kershaw had made six starts since spending the first four months of the season on the injured list as he recovered from offseason shoulder surgery. He is 2-2 with a 4.50 ERA.
