“I showed it to guitarists who went nuts. And that was the silent version.” Lost footage of Led Zeppelin playing Denmark in 1979 has surfaced and been restored with original audio

Previously unseen footage of Led Zeppelin’s performance in Copenhagen, Denmark, on July 24, 1979, has surfaced after 45 years. Captured by fan Lennart Ström using a Super 8 camera, the 13-minute film showcases the band during a warm-up show before their historic Knebworth concerts. The footage, which had been stored away for decades, was recently digitized and color-corrected, with audio from the original performance synchronized to the visuals.

The restored footage features snippets of 17 classic Led Zeppelin songs, including “Nobody’s Fault but Mine,” “Black Dog,” and “Whole Lotta Love.” Notably, it includes a segment of Jimmy Page performing a guitar solo. The film opens with the band energetically playing “The Song Remains the Same,” with Page wielding his twin-neck Gibson ED-1275 guitar.

Ström, who filmed the concert without audio, had previously shared the silent version with friends, who were enthusiastic about the rare footage. He remarked, “I showed it to some friends, guitarists who went nuts. And that was the silent version.”

The Copenhagen shows were intended as warm-up concerts for Led Zeppelin’s two Knebworth performances in August 1979. The Falkoner Theatre, where the Copenhagen concerts took place, was a significant venue for the band during their 1979 tour. The newly restored footage offers fans a rare glimpse into the band’s live performance during this period.
