ESPN REPORT: Matt Rhule just announce a unexpected departure of a significant player

Tampering, though prohibited under NCAA regulations, has remained a persistent concern in college football, particularly in the transfer portal era. Despite numerous coaches raising objections, little progress has been made to monitor and control the issue. Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule said some players on his roster were contacted by other teams gauging their interest in entering the transfer portal ahead of the spring window, which opened Tuesday.

“Our guys are really transparent,” Rhule said, via Husker247. “We’ve had players on our team already have people from other teams contact them. Come in and walk in and say, ‘Coach, look at this.’ Show us the text message, show us this. It’s a sad state of college football. But the problem is not the players. Let me start there, the problem is not the players.”

The Huskers still have two weeks of spring practice remaining with the finale set for April 27. The spring transfer portal window closes April 30, meaning players will have several days to weigh their options. Still, Rhule is not worried about the portal.

“If anybody on our team wants to go in the portal, it’s open today. That’s their right,” Rhule said. “Obviously no one has yet. I don’t anticipate anybody going in. When we get done with spring we’ll have a couple guys who’ll have a couple days to see if something’s best for them.”

More than 200 FBS scholarship players entered the transfer portal Tuesday, the opening day of the spring window. That does not include the more than 40 that previously entered last week as graduate transfers. There were more than 2,000 players that entered the transfer portal during the winter window in December and early January.

Only two players from Nebraska entered Tuesday, but both were away from the program for several months. Five Huskers entered the transfer portal during the previous window.

Rhule said that he does not coach with the transfer portal in mind and teaches his assistant coaches to do the same
