Kate Garraway celebrates new ‘first’ since husband Derek Draper’s death

Kate recently attended her first red carpet event since losing her husband

Good Morning Britain presenter Kate Garraway has been flooded with support after sharing a “first” following the death of her husband Derek Draper.

Derek died on January 3, almost four years after he was struck with Covid-19 at the start of the pandemic in March 2020, which left him critically ill. He then suffered a fatal cardiac arrest in early December of last year.

Now Kate has been flooded with support after attending her first red carpet event since Derek’s death where she was honoured with an award for her Outstanding Contribution to TV and Radio.

Taking to Instagram, Kate shared a snap with her former Good Morning Britain co-star and friend Ben Shephard. Alongside the photo, she shared a lengthy caption, which read: “Well this was a moment. My first red carpet event, following Derek’s passing – and WHAT an event.

“I’ve been aware of the incredible work @variety does over its 75 years to help disabled & disadvantaged children & heard that it’s awards dos are always the glitziest. I was so pleased to have an invite to attend but then to actually WIN an award was an incredible honour – a silver heart for Outstanding Contribution to TV & Radio – I guess if you cling on long enough you eventually make a contribution!!!!!! And then to be presented it by @benshephardofficial – so special.”

Fans took to the comment section and flooded the presenter with sweet messages. Sheridan Smith was among the first to share her support: “You’re incredible. We all jumped to our feet for you. I am in awe of your strength and resilience and being the fantastic mum you are.”

@the_saint1957 said: “Well deserved Kate, despite everything and that’s a lot more than any individual could stand . You just carried on. Congratulations perfectly that Ben presented it also.”
