William Contreras, catcher for the Milwaukee Brewers and younger brother to St. Louis Cardinals catcher Willson Contreras, recently spoke to the media regarding a controversial injury. On Tuesday, May 7 Willson Contreras suffered an arm fracture as his glove hand was struck by a baseball bat. New York Mets hitter J.D. Martinez was at the plate and hit him while swinging for a pitch.
During the second inning Willson Contreras got hit in the arm while J.D. Martinez was swinging. Contreras was called for catchers interference on the play and subsequently removed due to the injury. The St. Louis Cardinals announced later that game that he sustained a fracture in his arm.
There is controversy surrounding this injury. Several reporters indicated that Willson Contreras has intentionally been playing closer to hitters in order to steal strikes on pitches lower in the zone. On the other hand pictures surfaced that J.D. Martinez had his back foot well outside of the batters box.
Todd Rosiak, Brewers reporter for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, spoke with William Contreras after his brothers injury. He indicated that this is tough on him and his family while also acknowledging that J.D. Martinez hit him twice in the same game last year.
