Among the Beatles, Ringo Starr’s battles with addiction have often been overlooked—but as a fan, I think his journey to sobriety deserves more recognition. It’s a story of resilience, humility, and transformation. In the 1970s and early ’80s, Ringo faced serious struggles with alcohol. He and his wife, actress Barbara Bach, both acknowledged their dependency on drinking during that time. The party lifestyle of post-Beatles fame had taken its toll, and Ringo himself admitted that by the mid-1980s, things were out of control. What’s admirable is that he chose to take responsibility. In 1988, both Ringo and Barbara checked into rehab together. Since then, they’ve remained committed to sobriety. Ringo has often mentioned how that decision saved his life and his marriage. In interviews, he doesn’t glamorize the past. Instead, he speaks openly and gratefully about how recovery gave him clarity. “I was a drunk,” he once said bluntly, “but I’m not anymore.” His candidness has inspired many fans who face similar battles. Ringo’s health and spirit have only improved since. He became a vegetarian, practices meditation, and surrounds himself with positivity. His “peace and love” mantra isn’t just a slogan—it’s something he truly lives by. Every year on his birthday, he invites fans around the world to share a moment of peace. As a fan, I admire how Ringo turned a painful chapter into a powerful message. He didn’t let addiction define him. Instead, he found healing—and in doing so, became an even stronger voice for love, peace, and perseverance.
