An Epochal Heartfelt Open Letter from Lou Holtz
Dear Fellow Americans,
I write today with a deep sense of gratitude and admiration for the leadership demonstrated by President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence during a particularly tense meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. As a longtime coach, I have seen countless moments of tension in locker rooms, stadiums, and boardrooms. I know that it is in these moments that true leaders reveal themselves — not only in how they handle adversity but also in how they bring out the best in others. And that’s exactly what we witnessed in this crucial meeting.
President Trump, who has consistently demonstrated an unwavering commitment to the interests of the American people, approached the situation with a unique blend of determination and diplomacy. He recognized the gravity of the moment — a foreign leader standing at a crossroads for his nation, seeking not only assistance but also validation for his people’s struggles. The President handled the meeting with a measured calm, showing strength and clarity in his decisions while ensuring that the discussions did not escalate into something more dangerous.
What impressed me most about President Trump’s approach was his directness, paired with his willingness to listen. In my many years of coaching, I learned that to lead effectively, one must be both firm and receptive. Trump demonstrated this balance throughout his tenure as President, but it was particularly evident during his handling of foreign relations. He was able to convey America’s interests, protect our values, and negotiate for peace while still keeping his country’s best interests at heart.
Vice President Pence, often regarded as a steadying force in American politics, stood by Trump with quiet but strong support. His diplomatic skills were essential to diffusing any potential tensions that could have arisen during the meeting. Pence’s calm demeanor, along with his respectful engagement, allowed for the crucial dialogues to unfold in a constructive manner. In my career, I’ve always said that leadership is not about being in charge — it’s about taking care of those in your charge. Both President Trump and Vice President Pence embodied that spirit. They understood that the stakes were high, but their approach wasn’t one of aggression. Rather, it was one of resolve. They sought a path that would help Ukraine while protecting American interests, ensuring that diplomacy prevailed over discord.
As I reflect on their conduct during that critical meeting, I can’t help but feel proud of the leadership displayed by both men. It wasn’t just about the moment at hand, but about the broader message they sent to the world — that America stands strong, united, and resolute in its commitment to peace and prosperity.
