Within Temptation’s Robert Westerholt Retires from Touring to Focus on Family, Ending an Era.

Within Temptation’s Robert Westerholt Announces Retirement from Touring.

Robert Westerholt, co-founder and guitarist of the symphonic metal band Within Temptation, has officially announced his retirement from touring, marking the end of an era for fans of the legendary Dutch band. Westerholt, who formed the band in 1996 alongside vocalist and wife Sharon den Adel, has been a central figure in the group’s rise to global fame, crafting their distinct blend of heavy guitar riffs, orchestral arrangements, and ethereal vocals.

Westerholt shared the news in a heartfelt statement, citing a desire to focus on his family and personal life as the key reason for stepping away from the touring lifestyle. While he will continue to contribute to the band’s songwriting and production behind the scenes, he explained that balancing the demands of touring with family life has become increasingly challenging over the years.

“For the past few years, I’ve been stepping back from touring to spend more time with my children, and it’s clear to me now that this is where I need to be,” Westerholt said. “Music will always be my passion, and I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved with Within Temptation. But the constant travel and time away from my family no longer feel right for me.”

Westerholt had already reduced his touring presence in recent years, often performing only at select shows, while focusing more on the band’s creative output in the studio. His decision to formally retire from live performances confirms a shift that many fans had anticipated but still find bittersweet.

Within Temptation, known for albums like *Mother Earth*, *The Silent Force*, and *Hydra*, became a driving force in the symphonic metal genre, thanks in large part to Westerholt’s songwriting and his dynamic collaboration with den Adel. The band’s music combines cinematic elements with metal, creating anthems that have captivated audiences worldwide for nearly three decades.

In his absence, Within Temptation will continue to tour with their current lineup, with Westerholt’s parts covered by longtime session guitarists. Sharon den Adel also addressed fans, expressing gratitude for Westerholt’s contributions and assuring them that the band’s future remains bright.

“Robert’s creativity and passion are still very much a part of what we do, and we will continue to make music together,” she said. “We know this news is difficult, but his decision is what’s best for him and our family.”

Though Westerholt’s touring days are over, his legacy as one of symphonic metal’s pioneers will continue to resonate with fans, as Within Temptation presses forward into their next chapter.
