Kylian Mbappé Explains Why He Turned Down Liverpool Despite Being Close to a Move
Kylian Mbappé has revealed why he decided against joining Liverpool during the early stages of his career, despite coming close to a move to Anfield while he was still developing at Monaco.
The Real Madrid forward explained that Liverpool were seriously interested in signing him, with then-manager Jürgen Klopp personally involved in discussions about the club’s plans for him.
According to Mbappé, his mother was particularly keen on seeing him move to Liverpool because she was a big admirer of Klopp and the English club. She even travelled to Liverpool as part of the early negotiations, visiting the stadium and meeting people at the club.
Mbappé said his mother returned impressed by what she saw, describing Liverpool as a major club with a welcoming and family-like atmosphere.
However, despite Liverpool’s interest, Mbappé ultimately chose a different path. Having been born and raised in Paris, he wanted to remain in France and continue his development in his home city.
The French star explained that he felt there was no better experience at that stage of his career than becoming a star in his hometown. He therefore decided to join Paris Saint-Germain instead.
Mbappé also recalled his conversation with Klopp. He said that while Liverpool and Klopp’s project were naturally attractive, he was also considering other opportunities and believed each option could lead to a successful career.
After choosing PSG, Mbappé went on to establish himself as one of the world’s leading forwards. During his time in Paris, he made 308 appearances, scored 256 goals and won six Ligue 1 titles, among other honours.
He eventually left PSG to join Real Madrid, where he continued his career at the highest level.
Liverpool were not the only Premier League club interested in the young Mbappé. Arsenal were also reportedly among the clubs trying to sign him, with former manager Arsène Wenger said to have personally travelled to speak with the French teenager.
Mbappé’s decision to stay in France ultimately shaped the next stage of his career, as he became a superstar with PSG before eventually making his long-awaited move to Real Madrid.
