Howard Stern Relocates His Radio Station: A New Era for the Iconic Broadcaster

NEW YORK — In a deal estimated to be worth $100 million a year for five years, Howard Stern, one of the most popular personalities in American radio, said Wednesday he had signed a contract with Sirius Satellite Radio and would leave his longtime job at Infinity Broadcasting in January 2006.

 

Stern said by telephone Wednesday that his decision was driven both by a desire to help build satellite radio, which is not regulated by the federal government, and by the need to escape what has become ever-increasing restrictions on the content of his program.

 

Numerous radio stations that carry Stern’s show have been fined heavily by the U.S. Federal Communications Commission for sexual and scatological references on the show. A number of stations owned by Clear Channel Communications dropped Stern’s show because of continuing problems with the F
