Transfer insider claims Liverpool could be open to offers for player once described by Iraola as someone he would “need”.

Liverpool could reportedly be willing to sell Harvey Elliott this summer, despite new head coach Andoni Iraola recently insisting he will “need” the midfielder during the upcoming campaign.

The coming weeks are expected to play a major role in deciding Elliott’s future at Anfield after he returned from an underwhelming loan spell at Aston Villa, where he made just nine appearances in all competitions.

Although Iraola praised the 23-year-old’s attitude and eagerness during pre-season while stating that Liverpool would “need” him, speculation over a possible permanent departure has continued.

Transfer insider Pete O’Rourke believes Liverpool may be prepared to consider offers if Elliott fails to convince Iraola during pre-season, particularly with the midfielder entering the final year of his contract.

Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, O’Rourke suggested that if Elliott does not fit the manager’s plans in the opening weeks, Liverpool could be forced to entertain bids due to his contract situation.

Despite the uncertainty, Elliott is said to prefer staying at Anfield. However, Leeds United, Coventry City, Crystal Palace and Sunderland have all been linked with interest in signing him.

Pre-season now represents a huge opportunity for Elliott to revive his Liverpool career. Following Mohamed Salah’s departure and with Florian Wirtz not immediately available, the midfielder has a chance to impress Iraola and strengthen his place in the squad.

By the time Liverpool begin their Premier League campaign away to Newcastle on 23 August, a clearer picture should emerge regarding Elliott’s role under the new manager.

Iraola has already stressed the importance of squad depth as Liverpool prepare to compete on four fronts during the 2026/27 season, making Elliott a valuable option if he can rediscover his best form.

Nevertheless, with reports valuing him at around £25 million and uncertainty surrounding a new contract, Liverpool could decide to cash in if they believe an extension is unlikely.

For now, Elliott’s future remains in the balance, with his performances over the next few weeks likely to determine whether he stays at Anfield or moves on.
