Former NFL cornerback Vontae Davis, a two-time Pro Bowl selection with the Indianapolis Colts, was reportedly found dead at a Southwest Ranches home.
As first reported by WSVN, a death investigation is underway after the Davie Police and Broward County Medical Examiners’ Office reported to a residence in the area of Southwest 178th Avenue on Monday morning. At the residence, which property records indicate is owned by Davis’ grandmother, the former NFL cornerback was found deceased.
A first-team All-Big Ten selection with the Illinois Fighting Illini, Davis, 35, was selected by the Miami Marlins with the 25th overall pick of the 2009 NFL Draft. After an impressive rookie season in which he recorded 11 pass deflections and 4 interceptions, including a pick-six, Davis was named to the PFWA All-Rookie Team.
The passing of Davis was confirmed by University of Illinois assistant coach Chester Frazier, one of Davis’ college teammates with the Fighting Illini.
No details have been released on the cause of death, though, law enforcement officials told WSVN that no foul play was involved.
Davis grew up in Washington D.C., starring at Dunbar High School and he became one of the best defensive backs in the nation. After an outstanding career at Illinois, he made it to the NFL and quickly found success.
On August 26, 2012, Miami traded Davis to the Colts in exchange for a second-round pick. Davis blossomed in Indianapolis, earning consecutive Pro Bowl selections from 2014-’15. He spent the majority of his NFL career in a Colts’ uniform, suiting up for 76 regular-season games with the team.
